On Thursday November 2, 2017 attorney members of LawPact from Costa Rica, Canada, Germany, India, and the United States converged on Asheville for their bi-annual conference starting the next day. LawPact is an international association and network of business law firms created to assist member firms pursuing excellence in client service, firm management, the application of evolving technologies and the availability of trans-national referrals to meet the global needs of member firm clients. This year member firm McGuire Wood & Bissette hosted the conference group. We were excited to have them here and show off our great city!
MWB attorneys Tom Grella and Sabrina Rockoff made excellent presentations to the group on Friday morning. Tom moderated a panel on the New Legal Marketplace, with the other presenters from Nashville, Nebraska and Virginia. Sabrina and Dr. Cynthia Ackrill, a physician from Washington D.C., spoke in tandem on the Changing Workforce in law firms. On Friday afternoon, Daniel Garrie, an attorney and author from New York City, spoke on cybersecurity for law firms, including simulations on a firm’s being hacked, suffering a loss of client information and being shut-down by a malware attack. Tom and one of his panelists were called back for an encore hour on Saturday morning.
Friday evening found the lobby at the Firm filled with guests and MWB attorneys enjoying local craft beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres from Strada Italiano, a string duet of players from the Asheville Symphony, and lots of good cheer and conversation. After the reception the group went to CÚRATE for a specially prepared meal by Chef Katie Button. The LawPact guests reported they very much enjoyed staying at the stylish Hyatt Place Hotel.
After the conference officially ended mid-day on Saturday, LawPact provided an optional bus tour of the Biltmore Estate decorated for Christmas, and then coordinated dinner at Carmel’s for the remaining twenty attorneys. A hardy subset of those went on to hear a blues concert at the Orange Peel. With the warm weather and bright foliage, Asheville looked at its best.
