Planning for GLBT Couples Workshop: “Ready or Not – Married or Not”

Getting married is not as simple as you think! Getting married, whether you are a same-sex couple, or an opposite-sex couple, can result in some intended and some unintended legal, tax and financial consequences. A panel will provide an update on the current state of affairs at the national and at the state level in North Carolina. The panel will outline some planning techniques that same-sex couples in North Carolina can use. The panel will address these techniques for both married, as well as unmarried, couples.


Andrew D. Atherton Andrew practices Elder and Special Needs Law with McGuire, Wood & Bissette, P.A. Andrew is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and North Carolina. He was the 2012-2013 Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association, Elder & Special Needs Law section. Andrew was instrumental in drafting legislation for the North Carolina Legislature during the 2013 session to protect the rights of seniors and the disabled in need of Medicaid for long term care.

David M. Greiner, CRPC®, CFP® David is a Senior Vice President/Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch with over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. David earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from The American University in Washington, D.C.. David specializes in helping retirees and near-retirees plan for retirement with the goal of creating a steady and sustainable flow of income in retirement. David is actively involved as a board member or volunteer with a number of non-profit organizations in Western North Carolina including the Asheville Humane Society, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and the Western NC AIDS Project.

Harvey Jenkins Harvey is a principal and CPA with Gould Killian CPA Group, P.A.. Harvey graduated from Mars Hill College with a B.S.B.A. in 1978 and began his public accounting career with Patton, Hunter and Company. He has been awarded Certificates of Educational Achievement in Estate Planning, Tax Planning and Advising for closely-held businesses. Harvey works with a significant number of individual tax clients and provides accounting, income tax, and consulting services to small and medium sized businesses. He has been active in various community organizations and currently serves on the board of Western NC AIDS Project and Little Pearls.
